Welcome to the STOPS Website
STOPS (ST. TAMMANY OUTREACH for the PREVENTION of SUICIDE) was formed as a private non-profit organization in December of 2001. The organization is comprised entirely of volunteers who are committed to providing community programs in an effort to lower the suicide rate in the parish as well as to ameliorate the sting of the loss of a loved one to suicide. At the time of the creation of STOPS, St. Tammany had the highest suicide rate in the state. It is not know if this statistic continues to hold true as many parishes so gravely affected by Hurricane Katrina and her ensuing devastation have experienced an increased number of suicidal deaths.
The mission of STOPS is to reduce the incidence of suicide and its devastating aftermath in our community. By fostering prevention, intervention, and postvention resources, we seek to create a community safety net for individuals and families in crisis.
The STOPS organization is overseen by an active volunteer Board of Directors comprised of community leaders from various professions including law enforcement, mental health, social services, the legal profession and others interested in guiding the mission of STOPS. Smith, John Tobin, Cheri Webster, Michael F. Weiner, Frank White and Sandee Williamson.
STOPS also offers many programs to the citizenry of St. Tammany in an effort to decrease the loss of lives from suicide. These programs include: LOSS Team, SOS Meetings, Training, and Counseling.
